Our Mission

We are a group of parents dedicated to advocating for clean air in our Central Oregon schools. We want Bend-La Pine Schools to:

ensure clean air in every classroom
keep children indoors when the AQI is above 150
and install air quality monitors at every school.

BLS requires children stay indoors when the AQI exceeds 200 (Very Unhealthy) and allows discretion for administrators between 150-200 (Unhealthy).
School administrators use Watch Duty or the US EPA’s Air Now maps for real-time AQI updates.
Schools are equipped with MERV 13 filters for HVAC systems and will operate air handlers during smoke events.

Bend-La Pine Schools AQI policy as of June 2025 doesn't require children to be indoors until the AQI is over 200! It is up to individual school administrators to decide when to bring students inside when the AQI is between 150-200.

Children are more vulnerable to air pollution than adults. The US EPA considers them a sensitive group. Some of the reasons why are: they inhale 50% more air per pound of body weight, their lungs are developing, they play more outdoors, and they don't always recognize the dangers of wildfire smoke.
